Arts Los Altos rolled out its seventh, public art installation the week of August 23 with a new mural entitled, You Are Here. You Are There. This colorful, visually arresting mural enlivens the building at First and Main, housing iChakras, and iJuice, the new juice bar downtown.
From a Call for Art, Arts Los Altos selected artist Jose Di Gregorio. His design is colorful, inspirational, and hopeful. Di Gregorio hopes that the mural will cause people to push the pause button in their busy lives. His vision with the repetitive lines and shapes offer a meditative moment as the viewer observes the duality of chaos and tranquility. You Are Here. You Are There. alludes to the “enormity and wonder of the universe and to the individual as one of an infinite number of specks on a pale blue dot.” Jose resides in Sacramento and has been doing extensive domestic and international travel for mural and multimedia installations.
As the viewer gazes at this mural, they see a celestial night sky dotted with stars, vivid cloud shapes, and cosmic dust, including a series of repetitive geometric patterns extending toward the edges. In the center are two figures, an adult and a child. The mural was painted over a span of several days using spray paint and oil based metallic paint markers.
Jose Di Gregorio has been doing extensive domestic and international travel for mural and multimedia installations. Always a sports enthusiast and participant, Di Gregorio fell serendipitously into an artistic career after a sporting accident when he was 25. He began drawing and writing poetry and soon had a BFA from Indiana University’s Herron School of Art and Design. He began his postgraduate career with representational art but veered into line work and drip painting. This led to a fascination with form and geometry that was the gateway to his current boldly colored geometric paintings and large scale murals. He is also creating cutting edge pieces with images that are put into Photoshop and eventually cut with a laser.
